Belatoga Is Back
And this year, Saratogians know the drill. Here's (almost) everything that's happened so far this week.
Last year, the week leading up to the Belmont Stakes felt like chaos. No one knew what to expect; hotels still had rooms available after hiking up rates for Belmont weekend, store owners were bracing for crowds that didn’t exactly show up, businesses were dreaming up last-minute ways to cash in on the allure of the first-ever Belmont at Saratoga, locals were worried about parking, and everyone was wondering if Post Malone was actually in town. This year—and this may just be my personal experience—the week leading up to Belmont seems, somehow, calm. Like we’ve done this before.
Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus echoed that sentiment when I ran into him and his dog, Twinkie, at Kru Coffee last week. Everything was in order, the Belmont-centric events that worked last year were coming back bigger and better, and, while Todd said he probably wouldn’t see his wife at all Belmont week, the Chamber and its partners were set up to go full steam ahead on a great week.
And so far, the weeklong celebration that is the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival seems to be going off without a hitch. Here’s what’s happened so far:
